My Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Build a Natural Cob House

Reason #1: Your Health

One of the main things that led me to natural building methods was my search for ways to build a non-toxic, healthy home that I could live in and that it not tax my body.

Modern conventional building is highly toxic and potentially damaging to our health. From off-gassing in paints, carpets, glues, plastics, and a plethora of other synthetic materials, our bodies are constantly bombarded with a host of foreign and toxic onslaughts.

Our bodies each have a certain threshold of how much toxicity that they can process daily.

When the body’s threshold is surpassed with over exposure to environmental toxins, poor food choices, and any other unnatural substance we become sick and diseased.

One aspect to truly healthy living is to dwell in a building that is constructed out of materials that are natural and non-toxic to the body.

If you’re interested in learning more about this I highly recommend researching into Building Biology, and getting a book called Prescriptions for a Healthy Home by Paula-Baker LaPorte.

Reason #2: Cost Efficient

Firstly, I won’t say that cob homes are cheaper to build.

They can be…but that is just not always the case.

The cost of a cob home is going to depend on a variety of factors.

Some people want a humble little cob home, and others want a more extravagant style cob home.

It all depends!

But…

A cob home can be built very cheaply if that’s what you want.

I’ve seen several small cob homes built for $500-$800 dollars. Very low budget.

So, its absolutely possible.

But, no matter what the cost of your cob home…

You are getting more for your money!

A cob home is going to last much longer than a conventional stick-frame home and it can be passed down to your next generation.

Through proper design, cob homes can also be energy efficient and save you money on power too.

Reason #3: Proven Material

Cob is really just the English name given to a material that has been used around the world for thousands of years.

Mud, or earthen building, is a proven building method across the globe!

It has withstood the tests of time.

Somewhere around two thirds of the world’s population still build their homes with earth.

Some of these earthen buildings have lasted hundreds of years to even more than a thousand years!

This can’t be said for strawbale buildings (though I’m not against it), and certainly not for conventional stick-frame buildings.

This list of my 3 reasons is really just the tip of the iceberg…
